Salt: Essential or Harmful?
Salt gets a bad rap, but is it really the villain it’s made out to be? The truth is, sodium is essential for muscle function, hydration, and performance…
But too much of it can lead to health issues. So, how do you strike the right balance?
Let’s break it down.
The Good of Salt
- Essential for Bodily Functions: Sodium plays a key role in nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and maintaining fluid balance.
- Supports Hydration: Sodium helps prevent dehydration, especially for athletes.
- Aids Nutrient Absorption: It assists in glucose transport, which is crucial for energy.
The Bad of Salt
- Can Raise Blood Pressure: Some people are salt-sensitive, meaning high intake can spike BP.
- May Increase Cardiovascular Risk: Excess sodium is linked to heart disease in some populations.
- Processed Foods Are the Culprit: Most excess salt comes from fast food and packaged meals.
What Should You Do?
- If you sweat a lot (exercise, hot climate), you need salt.
- If you eat mostly whole foods, adding small amounts of high-quality salt is beneficial.
- If your diet is full of processed food, you’re likely overdoing sodium intake.
Bottom Line: Salt isn’t the enemy. Processed food is. Prioritize real food, stay hydrated, and use salt as a tool, not a crutch.
Stay strong,
