Can Cardio Alone Burn Fat Effectively?

Hey Family!

Martha recently asked me a great question:

“Can cardio alone burn fat effectively?”

While cardio has amazing benefits for heart health, lung capacity, and mood, relying on it alone for fat loss isn’t the best approach.

So, what’s the better way?

1️⃣ Track Your Macros & Maintain a Caloric Deficit
Fat loss happens when you consume fewer calories than your body needs to maintain its weight. Understanding your macronutrients—proteins, carbs, and fats—can help you create a sustainable deficit.

2️⃣ Prioritize Strength Training
Lifting weights builds lean muscle, which keeps your metabolism active even at rest. Plus, strength training triggers EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption), meaning your body burns extra calories post-workout.

Does that mean you should ditch cardio?

Nope! Keep it in your routine 2–3 times a week for heart and lung health—just don’t spend hours on the treadmill expecting drastic fat loss.

The bottom line:
Strength training + calorie deficit = sustainable fat loss and muscle retention.
